World Braille Day
The Braille system is a method that is widely used by blind and/or visually impaired people to read and write.
Braille can be traced back to the 1820's, when Louis Braille invented this writing and reading code. What makes Braille groundbreaking is that it could be translated to almost any language around the world. World Braille Day is commemorated on 4 January. The Braille system empowers millions of blind and visually impaired people across the world to read by touch. This is crucial in order to lead a more independent life.
Braille consists of an alphabet of 63 letters and symbols, each of which is formed by a synchronized pattern of one to six raised dots. These dots in turn are arranged on a six-position grid. Words can be identified according to the pattern distinguished by touch. This can be used to read musical notations, chemistry symbols, numbers and punctuation. Access to Braille allows one to be literate. This provides intellectual freedom, equal opportunity and economic self-sufficiency.
